Mayumi is a fiber artist working with natural dye and botanical prints on different media. All materials are sustainably harvested around the San Francisco Bay Area and some flowers and plants are grown in Mayumi’s garden. She studied Ikebana, field botany, edible and medicinal plants and this helps to create an aesthetic which is in harmony with nature and beauty. She is also an avid forager for wild plants and mushrooms, which she eats and also uses for dyeing silk and wool. She also grows dye plants in her garden in Oakland to get the vibrant colors for the background and for the leaf patterns. She aims to create sustainable art using nature.
Her art pieces are sold at Asian Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, San Jose Textile Museum and other prestigious art festivals. She won the award at the Mill Valley Arts Festival in 2022.
Mayumi will lecture on the history of natural dyes, which plants can be used, and their application to botanical printing.
Mayumi will teach an optional workshop in the afternoon.

Minimum enrollment: 6 people
Botanical printing uses fresh leaves along with mineral and tannin to transfer natural color and shape from plants onto natural fiber such as silk, cotton and linen. It is like printing a photo directly from the plants to the fabric. This introductory class will give you an understanding of dye plants and deepen your relationship with nature. You will make 1 silk scarf using fresh plants. The cost will include all materials and use of tools.
