Description:

Susan Conover will show us how to identify and measure that mystery yarn many of us have in our stash using the burn test and yarn balance.

Description

Susan Conover began spinning and weaving in 1980 and spent the next two decades studying under numerous international teachers. Her focus has always been on the historic aspects of the craft. Since 2000 she has offered courses in spinning and weaving from her studio. It is a premiere teaching environment with six Schacht Equipment floor looms and a “herd” of Schacht and Louet spinning wheels.

Her expertise has included being Operations Manager at Vavstuga Weaving School in Shelburne Falls, MA for five years. She specializes in lectures and workshops for guilds and other craft schools throughout the country.

Susan currently operates out of a newly remodeled studio that augments the original Schacht and Louet equipment with six Glimakra countermarch and counterbalance looms. She offers two to five-day workshops in her studio which include Weaving with Linen, Swedish Rag Rugs, Double Width Weave, Twills, Overshot Jamtlandsdrall, Comprehensive Basic Weaving, Basic Spinning, Spinning on a Great Wheel, Spinning Flax and Hemp, and many other topics. She is always willing to share her passion for weaving and spinning with her students!

Description: If you have some yarns in your stash that are not readily identifiable, you may be able to ascertain their fiber contents by safely performing a burn test. Susan will burn cotton, linen, rayon, wool, silk and nylon. The Yarn Balance (aka the McMorran Balance) is a handy device to measure the approximate yards per pound of a chosen yarn. This lecture is quite informative for all fiber artists who work with yarn, not just weavers and spinners.
