Dye Painting Workshop

Description:
This workshop will begin with students viewing and choosing from a variety of provided color inspirations. The chosen pre-wound warps or skeins will be distributed, and instructions given about preparing them for the dye process. There will also be discussion of dye safety measures, about how fiber reactive dyes work (also explaining how the assist chemicals function), and with cautions about how to keep from contaminating the dyes during the dyeing process.
Students will set up their workstations on long tables. Yarns begin soaking in activator, and after a time they are removed and the excess solution is extracted. Yarns are laid out on plastic wrap, ready to be dyed.
Dyes are accurately measured by the students, then mixed with water and urea to the depth of color desired. Dyes are then applied to the yarns.
In finishing, students will wrap the plastic wrap around the yarn, roll up and seal it inside a reclosable plastic bag, and clean up work areas.
At home, students will ‘batch’ their yarn in a warm place (~70°) for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight, then rinse thoroughly following directions that will be provided.
How will the course be presented? This is an in-person workshop. For your protection, we will follow the official Sonoma County Coronavirus COVID-19 Guidance that is in place at that time, which may include checking vaccination status, wearing approved masks, opening doors and turning on ceiling fans for ventilation, and social distancing.
Workshop fee for guild members: $55.00
Workshop fee for non-guild members: $90.00
Fee includes:
- Masks to protect from breathing of dye powder
- Disposable gloves (non-latex nitrile)
- Use of tubs and containers for soaking and dye mixing
- Floor and table surface protection
- Plastic wrap and reclosable bags for painted warps
- Various measuring tools
- Foam brushes for liquid dye application
- Cotton swabs for color sampling
- Color inspiration cards
- Fiber reactive dyes
- Dye-assist chemicals (activator-sodium carbonate, urea), Synthrapol
- Students’ choice of a pre-wound warp (4 yards long x 7” wide) or an equivalent weight of a skein (Lynn will contact registered student with instructions for selecting their yarn.)
- Tyvek tags to identify yarns (for owner name, warp length, width, sett -or- skein yardage & weight)

Maximum number of students: 12
Materials: Wear old clothes, shoes, and an apron, and bring a sack lunch.
Who should take this workshop? Anyone who is interested in learning how to dye yarn for weaving, knitting, or crocheting.
Cancellation Policy: Refunds will only be made for cancellations if the remaining registration meets the minimum participant requirements for the workshop. Refunds will not be made for workshop costs already incurred at the time of cancellation, such as materials fees.
